Description
This fire safety information card, featuring the popular Firefighter Ace, gives children a clear understanding of the steps they should take should they be confronted with a fire. Understanding what to do during a fire emergency is a crucial element of staying safe during that emergency.
It begins by telling kids that when they hear a smoke alarm, they should roll out of bed, crawl to the door, and test it with the back of their hand. If the door is hot, they should use their second way out. But if it’s cool, they should open it slowly and peek out. If there’s fire or smoke, they should use their second way out. But if it’s clear, children need to get out fast. If they must go through smoke to get out, they need to crawl low underneath the smoke.
Once children get outside, they need to get to their Safe Meeting Place and a member of the family should call 9-1- 1 from a neighbor’s house. Kids are reminded to stop, drop, and roll if their clothes catch fire.
The final section of the handout notes that “Firefighters Are Your Friends!” Firefighters can look scary with all their gear on, but they are there to help. It identifies each part of their uniform so children know what to expect if they see a firefighter in full gear.
